From 1991 the Ninety and the One Ten were renamed the Defender 90 and Defender 110. Throughout the 1990s the vehicle moved increasingly upmarket, while remaining true to its working roots. If ordered without any optional extras, the Defender is still a basic working tool. But any number of options and accessories can transform it into an ‘every day’ vehicle, without compromising its excellent off-road abilities.
The latest developments to the Defender arrived in 1997, with the biggest change being the drivetrain. The engine is a version of the 2.4 litre four-cylinder unit used in the highly successful Ford Transit. The engine's lubrication and sealing systems have been adapted for use in wet or dusty conditions and to maintain lubrication at extreme angles in off-road use. Re-tuning the engine means that the power level remains the same at 122 hp (91 kW), but with a lower power peak speed to provide better performance when towing and better acceleration.
Also, a new six-speed gearbox with longer gearing delivers more comfort and economy at faster speeds, and a fully revised fascia gives the Defender a more contemporary feel.
The current crop of Defenders are available in both 90 and 110 wheelbases and regularly pass through JamesFrench.com in the form of pick up, station wagon, utility wagon, double cab pick up, high capacity pick up, double cab HCPU and Defender professional. In addition we also boast some special editions of our own - look out for our coveted soft tops every summer.
